Taking the Discipline of Law Seriously: Twining, Arthurs, and Histories of Academic Lawyers

In 2019, William Twining and Harry Arthurs, academic lawyers whose careers peaked during the second half of twentieth century, published memoirs revealing central motivations forces underlying their intellectual endeavor. Their books are a source great nourishment, provoking readers to think deeply about challenges discipline law what might be done bring it closer realizing its full potential. They also reveal was like leading who pushed disciplinary boundaries, challenging norms repeatedly, over many decades, while universities societies surrounding them grew in size enjoyed increased prosperity academics—legal otherwise—were cast changing lights. During this time, writing teaching nature purposes moved from desks few well-known figures into hands an increasingly diverse mass. This review considers compares contributions these history legal scholars. It examines relevance each book primary readership: twenty-first century lawyers.
